When various interest rates change, the curve can flatten or steepen. These changes can provide futures traders with opportunities in US Treasuries. Today, tastytrade examine the current stay of the yield curve, paying particular attention to the far end contracts like /ZB and /UB (the "Classic" and "Ultra" bonds, respectively). Welcome to the Investors Trading Academy talking glossary of financial terms and events. Our word of the day is “Treasury Securities” These U.S. government-issued debt securities are divided into three categories by maturity dates: Treasury bonds mature in 10 or more years, Treasury notes mature between one and 10 years and Treasury bills mature in one year or less. These debt obligations are considered the safest option for bond investors since they are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. But that safety comes at a price: The interest rates on Treasury’s are lower than other bonds with the same duration. Treasury securities are divided into three categories according to their lengths of maturities. These three types of bonds share many common characteristics, but also have some key differences. The categories and key features of treasury securities include: T-Bills – These have the shortest range of maturities of all government bonds at 4, 13, 26 and 52 weeks. They are the only type of treasury security found in both the capital and money markets, as three of the maturity terms fall under the 270-day dividing line between them. T-Bills are issued at a discount and mature at par value, with the difference between the purchase and sale prices constituting the interest paid on the bill. T-Notes – These notes represent the middle range of maturities in the treasury family, with maturity terms of 2, 3, 5, 7 and 10 years currently available. Treasury notes are issued at a $1,000 par value and mature at the same price. They pay interest semiannually. T-Bonds – Commonly referred to in the investment community as the “long bond”, T-Bonds are essentially identical to T-Notes except that they mature in 30 years. T-Bonds are also issued at and mature at a $1,000 par value and pay interest semiannually. By Barry Norman, Investors Trading Academy

P-STRIPS and C-STRIPS are popular because: 1. They can be combined or re-constructed into any required sequence of cash flows, and 2. They are more sensitive to interest rates (i.e., higher duration) than coupon-bearing bonds (all other things being equal). https://goo.gl/csP9q8 Michael Boye from Saxo Bank's fixed trading income desk is trading on what he calls an overestimation of the probability of a US Federal Reserve rate hike in September and/or October. Michael says: "We think markets are overestimating the probability of a US Federal Reserve rate hike in September and/or October in light of soft economic data recently, but keep a tight stop loss due to current interest rate volatility. Note that we use the September future to avoid the June roll, but the June contract could be used for trading the same view. Both contracts are highly liquid." Management and risk description Target a move towards 2% yield and use a tight stop loss at a clear break of the March low to protect against current high market volatility. Parameters Entry: 126.10/126.11. Stop: 125. Target: 129. Time horizon: strategic.

Today was my first real day looking at the market in a long time. I'm looking to take the course offered by John at www.nobsdaytrading.com and in the process of looking at his materials, I saw a couple of trade opportunities today in the treasuries. I just need a bit more patience.

Many equity traders know they should be looking at the bond market but few actually understand what to look for that could give them an edge. The 10 year Treasury note bond yield so far in 2014 has only gone down and that is likely telling us something about the stock market in coming months.

The yield curve is a graphical representation of various bond maturities and their current rate of returns. Historically, the longer dated the maturity, the higher the returns will be, which tends to create an upward trajectory to the curve. Tune in as they present trade ideas based off of current yield curve extremes as well as their assumptions for future rate changes.
